Grand Forks, ND – Post-Christmas travelers in eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota should prepare for challenging driving conditions through Friday night. Forecasters warn of dense fog, freezing drizzle, and slick roads, particularly along highways and rural routes.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, southerly winds gusting up to 40 mph will continue to cause blowing snow and reduced visibility. Areas of freezing drizzle are expected to develop Thursday evening, persisting into Friday morning. These conditions increase the risk of icy patches and hazardous driving, especially on untreated roads.
Friday’s forecast calls for a slight chance of rain or a wintry mix by late afternoon in eastern North Dakota and freezing rain in northwest Minnesota. High temperatures will range from 31 to 38 degrees, with lows dropping to 24 degrees by Friday night. Drivers are advised to slow down and allow extra time for travel.
Looking ahead, conditions will improve by Saturday, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 32 degrees. However, colder air returns Sunday night, dropping lows into the teens.
Travelers should monitor updates from local authorities and check road conditions before heading out. The North Dakota Department of Transportation recommends carrying an emergency kit and avoiding unnecessary trips during periods of freezing drizzle or dense fog.
