Grand Forks, ND – A winter weather system is set to impact eastern North Dakota on Thursday, bringing blowing snow and potential whiteout conditions. Travel disruptions are expected to begin during the morning commute and last throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, sustained winds near 20 mph will create scattered whiteout conditions, particularly in areas experiencing heavy snow showers. If winds strengthen closer to 30 mph, travel may become significantly more dangerous due to frequent whiteouts.
A 20% chance of blizzard conditions exists in eastern North Dakota and the Red River Valley. Forecasters advise travelers to prepare for rapidly changing conditions and to carry a winter survival kit in case of delays or road closures.
Drivers should remain cautious and check weather updates before heading out. Cold temperatures will accompany the snow, making conditions even more hazardous. Officials recommend staying indoors if travel is not necessary.
