Bismarck, ND – Ice is forming rapidly along the Missouri River near Bismarck and Mandan, and local officials are cautioning residents about potential impacts, including a quick rise in water levels.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Bismarck, ice began accumulating Thursday, extending to the Hazelton boat ramp area. The river’s meandering path near the University of Mary is expected to trap ice soon, which could lead to a significant rise in water levels through the metro area. Historically, the river stage rises between 4.9 and 6.9 feet during such events, with the average being just over six feet.

The current river level at the Bismarck gauge is approximately 4.7 feet. Should ice completely cover the river, levels could peak between 9.6 and 11.6 feet. However, Minor Flood Stage, defined at 14.5 feet, is unlikely at this time.

The NWS warns that river levels can rise within 24 hours after ice formation. While warmer weather this weekend may temporarily slow the process, snowfall forecasted for Sunday evening is expected to accelerate ice development.

Officials urge residents to avoid walking on the river ice, as early formations are often unstable. Any high-water damage or concerns should be reported to local emergency management.

Stay alert for updates and exercise caution near the river.
