Bismarck, N.D. – A freeze warning is in effect across western and central North Dakota overnight, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 29 degrees by early Saturday. The cold snap could bring widespread frost, threatening crops, gardens, and unprotected outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, the warning stretches from Divide and Burke counties through Mountrail, McKenzie, Dunn, Mercer, and into Morton and McLean counties, including cities such as Dickinson, Williston, and Mandan. The warning begins at 1 a.m. CDT and lasts until 9 a.m. Saturday.
Residents are urged to cover tender vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and wrap or drain outdoor water lines to prevent damage. Farmers across western North Dakota should prepare for potential crop losses, particularly in low-lying fields where cold air tends to settle first.
Communities including Bowman, Hettinger, and Beach can expect the coldest air just before sunrise, with rural areas more at risk for hard frost. Travel impacts are not expected, but those heading out early should be prepared for chilly conditions.
The freeze warning remains in effect until Saturday morning, and additional advisories could be issued if cold air lingers into early next week.
