Grand Forks, ND – A widespread Freeze Warning has been issued for much of North Dakota tonight, with temperatures expected to drop well below freezing between midnight and 9 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks and Bismarck, subfreezing temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees Fahrenheit are forecast across much of the northern, central, and western parts of the state. Counties under warning include Benson, Cavalier, Ramsey, Towner, Eddy, Walsh, Divide, Burke, Ward, McLean, Mercer, Dunn, and Stark, among others.

Officials warn that frost and freeze conditions could kill sensitive plants, flowers, and unprotected crops. Residents are advised to bring potted plants indoors and cover garden vegetation before temperatures begin to fall around midnight.

The freeze marks one of the first widespread cold snaps of the season, signaling the likely end of the growing season for much of the state.

Temperatures are expected to rebound slightly by midweek, but forecasters say additional overnight freezes may follow later this week as cooler air continues to settle across the Northern Plains.
