Dickey County, ND – A collision on Highway 281 claimed the life of Vernon Dalstein Jr. and left three others injured. The crash occurred when a GMC Sierra driven by George Wiehahn slowed to make a left turn at State Line Road. A Subaru Ascent, driven by Vernon Dalstein, was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of the GMC.
Both vehicles left the roadway and came to rest in a nearby slough. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, providing medical treatment to all involved. Vernon Dalstein Jr. and his passenger, Sherry Dalstein, were transported to Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen. Sadly, Vernon succumbed to his injuries later that day.
George Wiehahn and Sherry Dalstein sustained only minor injuries, while Vernon Dalstein Jr. suffered serious injuries before his passing. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, neither driver faces charges. However, the crash remains under investigation.
Initial reports indicate George Wiehahn was not wearing a seatbelt, while Sherry Dalstein was. Seatbelt use for Vernon Dalstein remains unclear.
