Raleigh, N.C. – Damaging wind gusts could sweep through Raleigh, Durham, and other northern parts of central North Carolina beginning as early as 3 p.m. Wednesday, with storms expected to intensify into the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, strong to locally damaging winds are the primary threat in scattered storms developing across the region between 3 and 9 p.m. The highest risk zone includes areas north of a line stretching from Lexington to Wilson. Outside of storms, daytime highs will climb into the upper 80s, approaching 90 degrees in some locations.

Cities including Greensboro, Roxboro, and Rocky Mount fall squarely within the threat area. These gusty storms could down tree limbs, knock out power, and create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on U.S. 29, I-85, and U.S. 64. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and stay weather-aware throughout the afternoon.

This marks one of the first widespread severe weather threats for the northern Piedmont region this spring. While no tornadoes are expected, the National Weather Service recommends monitoring alerts and having a way to receive warnings in real time.

Storm activity is expected to diminish later tonight, but more weather advisories could be issued if conditions evolve.
