Wilmington, NC – Extreme summer heat is gripping southeast North Carolina this week as an Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday, with heat index values soaring as high as 107° across Wilmington and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Heat Advisory is already in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday, followed by an Extreme Heat Watch from Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening. These warnings cover New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Robeson, Columbus, and Bladen counties, among others. The most dangerous heat will peak midday Tuesday and Wednesday.

Highs will hit 96°F to 97°F in Wilmington Tuesday, but with humidity, it will feel significantly hotter — potentially life-threatening without precautions. Avoid non-essential outdoor activity during peak hours, drink water regularly, and wear light, breathable clothing. Car interiors will become deadly in minutes, so never leave children or pets inside vehicles.

Calmer winds and mostly clear skies will continue through Wednesday night, with a slight chance of storms returning Wednesday afternoon. While relief is expected Thursday, hot conditions persist.

⚠️ Roadways like U.S. Route 74 and I-140 around Wilmington may see increased emergency calls and roadside heat hazards. Local authorities urge residents to check on the elderly, stay indoors when possible, and prepare for continued discomfort.
