Newport and much of coastal North Carolina will see a shift Thursday as daily storm chances build heading into Labor Day weekend. Drivers along U.S. Highway 70 should prepare for reduced visibility and slick pavement by late afternoon Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, isolated showers and thunderstorms could develop after 2 p.m. Thursday, with temperatures holding near 82 degrees. Friday brings similar conditions, with storm chances rising again in the afternoon and a high around 84. While early mornings remain dry, afternoon and evening hours carry the greatest risk for heavy downpours and brief lightning.
Saturday marks the beginning of a more unsettled stretch. Storm chances increase to 40 percent Saturday afternoon, with rain possible overnight. By Sunday, scattered showers and storms may arrive earlier in the day, with rain lasting into the evening. Outdoor Labor Day plans could be interrupted, as forecasters give Monday a 50 percent chance of storms and Tuesday a lingering 30 percent chance.
Residents should keep rain gear handy and avoid low-lying roads prone to flooding during downpours. Lightning remains a risk for beachgoers and boaters, especially in the afternoons when storm activity peaks. Power outages also remain possible if gusty winds accompany stronger cells.
The unsettled pattern looks to stretch through early next week, meaning travelers should plan for delays and check for weather alerts before heading out.
