Morehead City, N.C. – After a cool start to the week, temperatures across eastern North Carolina have surged into the 80s and are expected to stay above normal through Friday, bringing a mix of dry heat and a looming threat of thunderstorms. Inland cities like Greenville and Kinston could see highs nearing 88°F by midweek, with coastal areas from Morehead City to Wilmington holding steady around 80°F.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, dry and sunny conditions will dominate through Thursday. Inland highs are forecasted between 85°F and 88°F, while coastal communities remain slightly cooler at 75°F to 80°F. A shift is expected Friday as a system increases the chance for scattered thunderstorms, especially across inland counties.
Communities along U.S. Highway 70 and I-95 should prepare for possible afternoon downpours and localized gusty winds by Friday. Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities during peak heat, stay hydrated, and keep devices charged in case of isolated power outages. Boaters and beachgoers along the Crystal Coast should also monitor the latest marine advisories.
The National Weather Service notes that the threat of thunderstorms could linger into Friday night. Additional alerts may be issued if storm chances increase.
