Omaha, Nebraska – Severe storms could sweep across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa this afternoon, bringing the threat of giant hail, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes through 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, supercell thunderstorms could produce hail up to 3 inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 75 mph if storms develop after 3 p.m. A Level 3 (Enhanced) risk area covers Omaha, Lincoln, and surrounding communities, with the greatest tornado threat focused across western Iowa.

Cities like Council Bluffs, Nebraska City, and Red Oak, Iowa, sit in the enhanced risk zone where strong EF-2 or larger tornadoes could form. Meanwhile, areas including Norfolk, Wahoo, and Grand Island face a lower but still notable risk for isolated severe storms. The exact position of the cold front remains uncertain, which could limit how many storms form across eastern Nebraska.

Drivers are urged to stay weather-aware, avoid outdoor plans during peak storm hours, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Residents should also secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages due to high winds.

Severe weather warnings remain in effect through Monday evening, with updates likely if conditions evolve.
