Newport, NC – North Carolina is set to experience wet weather throughout the weekend, with a risk of severe thunderstorms. Residents can expect 1-2 inches of rain through Sunday, with localized amounts potentially exceeding 3 inches.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Newport/Morehead City, a few storms may become severe today, bringing damaging wind gusts and frequent downpours. Flooding could occur in areas with heavy rainfall. The severe weather risk level is currently marginal (Level 1 of 5).

The forecast for Saturday, July 20, indicates a high of 87°F in New Bern and 82°F in Manteo, with a 60% and 50% chance of thunderstorms, respectively. Additionally, there is a high risk of life-threatening rip currents south of Cape Hatteras, particularly in the surf zones of beaches such as Cape Lookout, Frisco, and Buxton.

The NWS advises residents to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and stay informed about weather updates. Beachgoers are urged to heed warnings about rip currents and exercise caution near the water.
