Cold air bites early, grass crunches underfoot, and flags snap sharply across the Piedmont as winter tightens its grip on North Carolina. Dry air and gusty winds are already raising fire danger today, while attention shifts toward a cooler, unsettled weekend that could bring rain, then a brief snow chance around Charlotte by Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, relative humidity drops below 25 percent today while northwest winds gust near 25 mph. Those conditions elevate wildfire risk across Mecklenburg County and much of the western Piedmont through early evening. Officials urge residents to delay outdoor burning and use extreme caution with any heat source.

Temperatures rebound modestly Friday under sunshine, but the pattern turns more active by Saturday. Clouds increase, and scattered showers develop late in the day. Pavement may turn damp by afternoon, especially along I-77 and I-85 corridors. By early Sunday, colder air filters back in behind the system, allowing rain to briefly mix with snow before tapering off. Accumulation appears limited for now, but slick spots remain possible at sunrise, especially on bridges and untreated roads.

Highs Sunday struggle near 40 degrees, reinforcing a renewed cold snap. Any moisture left on roadways could refreeze after sunset, increasing the risk for black ice into early Monday. Drivers should plan extra time and stay alert during early-morning travel.

Looking ahead, cold mornings persist into early next week before gradual warming returns by midweek. Meteorologists continue monitoring the late-week pattern, with additional advisories possible if colder air arrives faster than expected. Traveling this weekend?
