Raleigh, North Carolina – A surge of arctic air is expected to spill into North Carolina late this week, bringing a stretch of unusually cold temperatures, gusty winds, and a chance of snow that could affect travel and daily routines across the state. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the teens, with daytime highs remaining well below normal through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest conditions are expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a polar air mass presses south into the Carolinas. Gusty northwest winds will make it feel significantly colder, with wind chills dropping into the single digits and teens during overnight and early morning hours. Periodic snow showers or flurries are also possible as disturbances move through the cold air.

The best chance for snow will be across the mountains and foothills, including Boone, Asheville, and areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway, where slick conditions could develop on Interstate 40, Interstate 26, and secondary roads. Parts of the Piedmont, including Raleigh, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, could see brief snow or flurries, while eastern North Carolina is more likely to experience dry but sharply colder conditions.

State emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors during the coldest periods, dress in layers, and protect exposed pipes. Drivers should remain alert for icy patches, especially overnight and early morning.

The cold snap is expected to persist through Tuesday, with additional advisories or winter weather alerts possible as conditions evolve.
