Richmond, VA – Severe thunderstorms are sweeping across central and southeastern Virginia, bringing damaging winds and the threat of tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Chesterfield, Hopewell, Petersburg, Prince George, Henrico, and surrounding areas until 2:30 PM EST Wednesday.
According to the NWS, storms moving northeast at 50 mph have been detected, with wind gusts reaching 60 mph. These high winds pose a significant risk of downed trees and power lines, potentially causing power outages and hazardous travel conditions. Areas expected to be impacted include Jordans Point, New Kent, Charles City, and King and Queen Court House within the hour.
Residents are advised to seek shelter in a sturdy interior room on the lowest floor of their buildings. The Tornado Watch remains in effect until 8:00 PM EST, meaning conditions are favorable for tornado development.
Meanwhile, in North Carolina, severe weather is also impacting Warren and Halifax Counties, including Roanoke Rapids and Weldon. Storms in these areas are moving at 40 mph with similar 60 mph wind gusts. The NWS warns of potential damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
Officials urge residents to remain vigilant and stay updated with emergency alerts. If a tornado is spotted, take immediate cover.
