Raleigh, NC – Southern states, including North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina, are facing hazardous travel conditions due to black ice and freezing temperatures. Officials have issued advisories urging caution through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Morehead City, NC, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of eastern North Carolina from 8 p.m. Thursday until 9 a.m. Friday. Wind chills as low as 5 to 10 degrees above zero could lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.

In Georgia, the NWS in Peachtree City warned of icy patches on secondary roads as melted snow refreezes overnight. Drivers in middle Georgia are advised to reduce speed and stay alert for black ice, particularly in rural areas.

South Carolina and northern Florida are experiencing similar risks, with temperatures dipping into the low 20s. Black ice on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces is difficult to detect, increasing the potential for accidents and slips.

Authorities recommend delaying non-essential travel, dressing warmly, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, maintain distance, and avoid sudden stops on icy roads. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by mid-morning Friday, improving road conditions.
