Raleigh, NC – Strong thunderstorms capable of producing 70 mph wind gusts and ping-pong ball-sized hail are moving across central and eastern North Carolina this evening under a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, the threat zone stretches from Jacksonville and New Bern to Fayetteville, Sanford, Raleigh, Rocky Mount, and Henderson. These storms may bring damaging wind, frequent lightning, and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter. While the main hazards are wind and hail, an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.

Interstate corridors including I-40 and I-95 are at risk for sudden wind gusts, blinding rain, and falling limbs. With nearly 6 million people in the watch area, residents should secure loose outdoor items, stay weather-aware, and prepare for power outages or travel delays.

The most intense storms are expected through early evening, but conditions could change quickly. If warnings are issued, seek shelter indoors immediately and avoid using electrical appliances during lightning activity.

The severe thunderstorm watch continues until 9 p.m. Additional alerts may be issued if storms intensify or expand later tonight.
