Raleigh, N.C. – Strong thunderstorms will sweep across central North Carolina this afternoon through late evening, bringing a risk of damaging winds and hail to cities including Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Greensboro.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, storms are expected to begin in the Triad region between 2 and 6 p.m., move through the Triangle from 5 to 8 p.m., and reach southeastern areas such as Goldsboro and Clinton between 7 and 10 p.m. The primary threats include isolated strong wind gusts and pockets of hail, particularly along and ahead of a moving cold front.
Residents in Wake, Durham, Guilford, Cumberland, and Johnston counties should remain weather-aware, especially during commute hours. Downed trees, localized power outages, and slick roads are possible during the strongest storm windows. Emergency officials recommend avoiding non-essential travel during peak impact periods and securing outdoor objects that could be blown around by high winds.
This round of storms follows a stretch of relatively calm April weather and marks one of the season’s more potent systems.
The National Weather Service warns that additional alerts may be issued throughout the evening as the system progresses eastward.
