Wilmington, NC – Freezing rain is creating dangerous travel conditions across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, freezing rain will taper off overnight, but a light glaze of additional ice accumulation is expected. Areas affected include Columbus, Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties in North Carolina, as well as Marlboro, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, Williamsburg, and Horry Counties in South Carolina.

Residents should expect slippery roads, sidewalks, and bridges, particularly during the morning commute. Officials urge drivers to slow down, use caution, and prepare for potential power outages due to ice accumulation on trees and power lines.

The hazardous conditions extend to cities such as Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Florence, Lumberton, and Whiteville. Travelers can check real-time road conditions by dialing 511.

Temperatures are expected to rise later in the morning, helping to melt ice. However, until then, black ice remains a significant risk, especially in shaded areas and on untreated roads.
