Wilmington, NC – Residents across eastern North Carolina should prepare for dangerous driving conditions as temperatures fall below freezing tonight. Black ice is expected to form on roads, walkways, and bridges, posing a significant risk to drivers and pedestrians.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop to 29 degrees overnight, causing melted snow and frost to freeze on untreated surfaces. This will create deceptive, hard-to-see black ice on major roadways, including I-95 and local streets. Officials warn drivers to reduce speeds and allow extra time for travel, especially on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.
Sunday’s sunny weather with a high near 55 will give way to increasing clouds overnight, followed by likely showers Monday morning. Rain is expected to end by midday, with temperatures reaching 48 degrees before a dry, mostly sunny week ahead. Highs will climb into the 60s by Wednesday and Thursday, offering a reprieve from the freezing start to the week.
Residents are advised to remain alert tonight and exercise caution when walking or driving. Slippery sidewalks and parking lots could lead to falls, while black ice on roads may cause loss of vehicle control.
Plan ahead for Monday’s morning commute by leaving earlier and watching for icy patches, particularly on less-traveled roads.
Extended Forecast:
• Monday:Showers likely before 1 p.m., high near 48.
• Tuesday:Sunny, high near 60.
• Wednesday:Sunny, high near 65.
• Thursday:Partly cloudy, high near 55.
