Raleigh, NC – North Carolina residents should prepare for dangerously high temperatures today, with heat indices ranging between 105-115°F. The National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC has issued a heat advisory, indicating that the ‘coolest’ readings will be along the coast due to strengthening onshore winds. The peak heat indices are expected to reach 112°F in Richlands and Columbia, with New Bern and Jacksonville seeing up to 111°F.

According to the National Weather Service, a couple of showers or storms could form again later this afternoon, providing a brief respite from the oppressive heat. Those fortunate enough to receive a shower will experience a temporary cooling, with temperatures briefly dipping into the 70s.

Residents are urged to take precautions against heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It’s essential to stay hydrated, move to cooler areas, and loosen clothing. Heat exhaustion symptoms include dizziness, heavy sweating, and nausea. Heat stroke is more severe and can cause confusion, dizziness, and unconsciousness. If heat stroke is suspected, call 911 immediately.

Despite the brief chance of rain around 10 AM, the heat will remain a significant concern throughout the day. Authorities recommend checking on vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children, ensuring they stay cool and hydrated. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, typically between 1 PM and 4 PM.
