Raleigh, N.C. – Drivers across central and eastern North Carolina are facing hazardous morning commutes as dense fog blankets more than 30 counties, reducing visibility to near zero in some areas until 9 a.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Raleigh and Morehead City, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning for areas including Raleigh, Fayetteville, Durham, Goldsboro, Jacksonville, and Kinston. Visibility in affected zones may fall below a quarter mile, especially along rural roadways and low-lying areas.

The advisory covers major commuting corridors such as I-40, I-85, and U.S. Highways 1 and 70, and includes key counties like Wake, Johnston, Cumberland, Onslow, and Craven. School zones and bus routes are of particular concern due to limited visibility during peak drop-off hours. Officials urge drivers to slow down, use low beam headlights, and allow extra stopping distance.

This is the fifth fog advisory issued in the state this spring, a result of overnight humidity levels combining with light winds and clear skies. Commuters are advised to check local traffic apps and NCDOT updates before leaving home.

Fog is expected to lift gradually after 9 a.m., but isolated patches may persist longer in shaded or wooded areas. Additional advisories are not expected but could be issued again if conditions redevelop overnight.
