Greenville, NC – A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday for parts of eastern North Carolina as temperatures plunge to 12°F, creating hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the advisory covers Beaufort, Greene, Martin, Pitt, Tyrrell, and Washington counties, including Greenville, Washington, and Plymouth. Residents should take precautions against hypothermia and frostbite, especially with prolonged outdoor exposure.

Officials urge wearing layers, hats, and gloves when outside and keeping pets indoors as much as possible. Those with outdoor animals should provide warm, dry shelters with unfrozen water. Additionally, residents should check on elderly neighbors and relatives to ensure their safety in the extreme cold.

Portable heaters should be used safely and as directed, while generators and grills must not be used indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise after 9 a.m., but freezing conditions will persist early in the day. Travelers should use caution on roads, particularly in shaded areas where black ice may form.

For the latest updates, check with the National Weather Service or local emergency management officials.
