Wilmington, NC – Residents across Wilmington are urged to prepare for a prolonged stretch of cold nights as temperatures dip into the low 20s starting tonight. A steady breeze during the day will add to the chill, with sunshine unable to lift highs above the mid-40s.
According to the National Weather Service, the coldest conditions will persist for three consecutive nights, with the potential for upper teens in sheltered areas. Homeowners should take immediate precautions to protect outdoor pipes from freezing. Insulating exposed pipes and letting faucets drip overnight are simple but effective ways to prevent damage.
Wednesday and Thursday will see sunny conditions during the day with highs near 45 degrees. However, nighttime lows will remain harsh, dropping to around 21 degrees. Winds from the northwest will ease by midweek, reducing wind chills slightly.
The extended forecast shows some relief heading into the weekend. Friday brings highs in the mid-40s, but rain is likely Friday night and into Saturday. Highs on Saturday could reach the low 50s before the system clears out, leaving partly sunny skies on Sunday.
Travelers are advised to be cautious of icy patches early in the morning, especially on bridges and overpasses. Local officials recommend checking on vulnerable neighbors and ensuring pets are brought indoors during these cold nights.
Stay tuned for further updates and any changes to the forecast as the week progresses.
