Newport, NC – Residents in eastern North Carolina should prepare for dangerously cold temperatures Friday morning as an arctic front continues to push through the region. Wind chills could drop to the upper single digits, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday. Winds from the northwest at 9 to 13 mph will make Friday morning feel even colder despite sunny skies and a high near 40°F.
Friday night will be mostly clear, but temperatures will plummet to 22°F. A gradual warm-up begins Saturday, with highs reaching 47°F under mostly sunny skies. By Sunday, temperatures will climb further, hitting 55°F.
The warming trend will continue into early next week, with highs reaching the upper 50s Monday and into the 60s by Tuesday and Wednesday. However, residents should remain cautious overnight as lows will still dip into the 30s.
Those venturing outside Friday morning should wear layers, hats, and gloves. Pet owners should bring animals inside, and residents should check on elderly neighbors.
