
Naperville, IL – Nicor Gas is helping income-eligible customers in Illinois manage energy costs with its expanded 2025 assistance programs. These initiatives, including the Shield of Caring program, provide crucial support for households struggling to pay utility bills.
The Shield of Caring program, managed by The Salvation Army, offers grants up to $250 annually to cover natural gas bills. The program also provides aid for essentials like rent, groceries, and winter clothing to help families stay safe and warm.
Since 2021, over 20,000 customers have benefited from the program, with 35,464 receiving services like coats and food. Nicor Gas has committed $5 million annually to expand these efforts. Eligible customers with household incomes under 400% of the federal poverty level can apply at shieldofcaring.com.
Additional programs include LIHEAP, which offers federal aid for low-income households, and the Sharing Program, providing grants up to $400. Payment plans and energy efficiency programs are also available to reduce costs.
