Buffalo, NY – Lake effect snow is set to hammer northern Erie and Genesee counties starting tonight, continuing through Friday morning. Travel on I-90 and surrounding roads could be hazardous as blowing snow reduces visibility to near whiteout conditions. Up to 20 inches of snow is possible in the most persistent lake effect bands.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the snow is expected to intensify overnight into Thursday morning, with winds gusting up to 45 mph. This combination will create significant drifting and dangerously slick roads. Commuters are urged to allow extra travel time and avoid unnecessary trips during peak snow periods.
The snow will taper off by Friday afternoon, leaving behind bitterly cold conditions. Highs on Thursday will only reach 26°F, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Friday promises some relief with mostly sunny skies but temperatures will remain below freezing.
Looking ahead, Saturday will see partly sunny skies and a high of 37°F. A mix of rain and snow returns late Saturday night, continuing into Sunday. By Monday, skies clear slightly with a high near 48°F, offering a brief break from wintry conditions.
Residents should stock up on essentials, check road conditions frequently, and stay updated on weather advisories. Travel restrictions may be enacted on major roadways as the storm progresses.
