Binghamton, NY – Snow showers will move through the region today, but the biggest concern is a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain expected late Wednesday into Thursday, creating hazardous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), light snow is forecast throughout the day, with temperatures reaching a high of 31°F. Winds will gust up to 24 mph, reducing visibility for drivers. Snow accumulation will be minimal, but roads could still become slick.
The real threat arrives Wednesday night into Thursday as a low-pressure system moves into the region, bringing a dangerous mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Snow will likely begin after 1 a.m., transitioning to freezing rain by morning. Black ice may form overnight, making Thursday morning’s commute hazardous, particularly on major highways like I-81 and Route 17.
Thursday’s temperatures will rise to 41°F, helping melt some ice by the afternoon. However, early morning travel could still be dangerous, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. The NWS warns that travel delays and scattered power outages due to ice accumulation are possible.
Thursday night will be mostly cloudy with temperatures dropping to 25°F, followed by calmer weather on Friday with partly sunny skies and a high of 31°F. However, another round of winter weather is possible Saturday night, with snow and freezing rain in the forecast.
Drivers should plan for extra travel time and use caution on the roads, especially during the Thursday morning commute. Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve.
