Albany, NY — Light to moderate snow is expected to hit Upstate New York beginning Wednesday afternoon, potentially disrupting evening commutes along I-90. Drivers should prepare for slippery roads and reduced visibility as snowfall intensifies into the night.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a minor winter storm will likely bring 2 to 4 inches of snow from 1 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected during the Wednesday evening commute, impacting areas north of I-90. An arctic front later in the week may lead to additional snow showers and frigid conditions on Thursday.
Daytime temperatures on Wednesday will hover around 35°F before dropping into the low 30s at night. Winds are forecast to remain light, but freezing conditions could cause black ice on untreated surfaces. By Thursday, snowfall may taper off, but scattered snow showers are still expected. Temperatures will drop further, with highs near 29°F on Friday.
Travelers should use caution on slick roadways, especially during peak travel hours on Wednesday evening. Road treatments and plow operations will likely be underway, but untreated roads may remain hazardous. For those traveling long distances or on rural roads, consider adjusting plans to avoid hazardous conditions.
This week’s extended forecast suggests a break in the snow by Saturday, with partly sunny skies and highs near 32°F. However, colder air will persist into the weekend.
