New York’s Capital Region wakes to misty air and bending treetops as strong winds surge across the Hudson Valley. Light drizzle coats roads early, and a sharper winter edge follows fast behind it.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until early Saturday morning. South to southwest winds increase through today, sustained near 20 to 30 mph with gusts approaching 50 mph, especially across higher elevations and exposed areas. Periods of rain move through early, then taper as colder air presses in later.

Across Albany, Troy, Schenectady, and along I-87, I-90, and Route 7, drivers should prepare for reduced visibility, ponding water, and sudden crosswinds. High-profile vehicles may struggle during peak gusts. As temperatures fall into the 20s tonight, leftover moisture on roads could freeze quickly, raising the risk for patchy black ice on bridges, ramps, and shaded stretches.

Saturday stays colder and quieter. Clouds linger with highs near the mid-30s, keeping a wintry feel in place. Saturday night dips below freezing again. By Sunday, partial sunshine returns, but temperatures remain seasonably cold, reinforcing early winter travel conditions.

Looking ahead, meteorologists are tracking a developing Christmas travel pattern. Snow showers become possible early next week, especially Monday night into Tuesday, with temperatures hovering near freezing. Even light snow could impact commutes and longer holiday drives. Models hint at unsettled conditions lingering toward Christmas Day.

Secure loose outdoor items, slow down on wet or icy roads, and allow extra travel time tonight. Heading out for Christmas travel soon? Tell us what conditions look like where you are.
