ALBANY, New York – With Thanksgiving travel just weeks away, New York transportation officials are urging drivers to ready their vehicles now for the challenges of winter driving. From Albany to Syracuse, motorists are being asked to take preventive steps before the first widespread snow and ice hit Upstate highways later this month.
The New York State Department of Transportation says early November is the best time to inspect tires, brakes, and windshield wipers, while checking battery strength and fluid levels. Drivers should pack an emergency kit with blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables, nonperishable food, and traction material such as sand or kitty litter. “Preparation before Thanksgiving travel can prevent breakdowns and help families reach their destinations safely,” a NYSDOT spokesperson said.
Officials caution that holiday travelers on the Thruway (I-90), I-81, and Route 17 often face changing conditions over long distances. Keeping the gas tank at least half full, dressing in layers, and carrying extra water and a phone charger are essential for those driving between major cities or rural stretches.
Motorists are encouraged to check the 511NY system for live traffic, plow, and closure updates once the season begins. State agencies emphasize that early action — before heavy snow returns — is key to safe, efficient travel across New York’s diverse regions from the Hudson Valley to Lake Erie.
