MANCHESTER, New Hampshire – As Thanksgiving travel nears, New Hampshire officials are reminding drivers to prepare vehicles now for the return of winter driving conditions. From Manchester to Concord, the focus is on readiness — making sure cars, trucks, and SUVs are equipped for snow, ice, and long-distance holiday travel before storms begin later this month.
The New Hampshire Department of Transportation recommends all motorists begin seasonal maintenance checks in early November. Drivers should inspect tires, test batteries, top off antifreeze, and replace worn wipers to prevent cold-weather failures. Officials also stress the importance of a fully stocked emergency kit, including a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, traction material, and extra clothing.
Those traveling between Portsmouth and Keene, or through mountain corridors such as Route 16 and I-93, are encouraged to plan ahead for changing road conditions and limited service areas. “Getting ready now ensures safer, more reliable travel when winter weather hits,” a NHDOT spokesperson said. Keeping gas tanks at least half full and carrying water, snacks, and a phone charger can prevent serious delays during long waits for assistance.
The department also recommends bookmarking New England 511 for live highway, plow, and closure information throughout the winter months. Officials say early preparation will help reduce roadside emergencies and keep Thanksgiving traffic moving safely across New Hampshire’s cities and scenic routes.
