Rensselaer, New York – Sunshine is breaking through the clouds across New York’s Capital Region today, but a much wetter pattern is already taking shape. Roads are dry for now, yet conditions could deteriorate quickly by Monday as a surge of rain and thunderstorms targets eastern New York.
According to the National Weather Service, Sunday will feature mostly sunny skies with temperatures climbing to around 77 degrees. A stray afternoon shower or thunderstorm remains possible, but most communities from Albany and Rensselaer to Troy and Schenectady should stay dry through much of the day.
The bigger weather story arrives Monday. Meteorologists are tracking a stronger system that brings widespread showers and the potential for thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. Rain chances climb to 90 percent, making Monday the wettest period of the upcoming week.
Drivers along Interstate 87, Interstate 90, U.S. Route 4, and Route 7 should prepare for slick pavement and reduced visibility during periods of heavier rain. Plan extra travel time Monday afternoon and keep headlights on during downpours.
Latest forecast guidance shows rainfall totals generally between one-half and three-quarters of an inch, with locally higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, isolated storms could produce gusty winds and brief travel disruptions.
Temperatures briefly cool into the lower 70s Monday before a rebound arrives. By Tuesday, skies begin improving with highs near 80 degrees. Sunshine returns in force Wednesday as temperatures climb into the lower 80s across much of the Capital Region.
Looking farther ahead, above-normal temperatures appear likely across the Northeast later next week, signaling a stronger taste of summer after Monday’s soaking rain.
