New York weather remains gray and damp across the Southern Tier this afternoon as low clouds settle over Binghamton and rain showers drift across the hills of Broome County. Wet pavement shimmered along Interstate 81 and Route 17 late this morning while cool southeast winds pushed mist through valleys near Vestal and Johnson City.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, showers remain likely through much of the afternoon with rain chances around 70% before gradually easing later in the day. Additional showers and isolated thunderstorms redevelop tonight into early Monday, with precipitation chances increasing to 90% overnight.
Drivers should remain alert for reduced visibility and slick roads, especially near elevated sections of I-86 and secondary roads across Chenango and Tioga counties. Some areas may pick up between a quarter and half inch of rain through Monday morning, while patchy fog could develop again after midnight as winds weaken and moisture lingers near the ground.
The soggy stretch does not last all week. Temperatures rebound sharply by Tuesday as warmer air pushes northward into upstate New York. Binghamton could jump from the upper 40s this morning to highs near 83 degrees Tuesday and 84 degrees Wednesday. That rapid warmup may help fuel a few isolated thunderstorms later in the week, though widespread severe weather is not expected for now.
Across the broader Northeast, stubborn cool air continues colliding with humid southern moisture, keeping weather conditions unsettled through the holiday stretch. Travelers heading toward Syracuse, Scranton or the Catskills should expect changing conditions quickly during heavier showers.
More advisories could follow if additional rain bands organize across central New York later this week.
