New York — The cold bites hard this morning, with exhaust plumes hanging over Buffalo streets and snowpack crunching underfoot.

A Weather Alert remains in focus across western New York as Arctic air grips the region. Temperatures sit near 7 degrees early, and wind chills dip below zero at times. Even brief exposure feels harsh, and untreated surfaces remain slick after days of deep freeze.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the region stays locked in below-normal temperatures through midweek. Highs today struggle to reach the lower 20s. Winds stay light, but the cold alone is enough to stress vehicles, pipes, and people.

Light snow showers are possible late today into tonight. While amounts look minor, even a dusting can cause problems. With pavement temperatures well below freezing, snow will stick quickly. Expect slick stretches on I-90, Route 33, and neighborhood roads during the evening commute.

Tuesday brings a modest change. Clouds linger, and highs climb into the mid-20s. A few additional snow showers may drift through, but coverage remains spotty. Crews should manage roads, though drivers should still plan extra time.

Wednesday stays cold and mostly dry, with highs near 20. Another weak system approaches late Thursday into Thursday night, bringing a better chance for snow showers. Any accumulation, even light, could worsen travel as temperatures fall back into the teens.

Looking ahead to the Feb 6–8 weekend, winter tightens its grip again. Highs dip back toward the teens, and overnight lows approach zero. Flash freezing remains a concern whenever snow briefly melts during daylight.

Longer-range signals hint at gradual moderation later next week, but winter remains firmly in control for now.
