New York — Snow blasts sideways across open roads this morning as gusty winds whip flakes into blinding sheets. Visibility drops fast, and drifts pile up almost as quickly as plows can clear them. MLK Day begins under a high-impact Winter Weather Alert for western New York.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has a Winter Storm Warning in effect through Wednesday afternoon for Buffalo and surrounding counties. Lake-effect snow bands continue to intensify downwind of Lake Erie. Totals of 10 to 20 inches are expected, with the highest amounts south of Buffalo. Winds gusting near 50 mph create blowing snow and frequent whiteout conditions.

Travel conditions are already dangerous and may turn life-threatening at times. Roads become snow-covered quickly, especially along I-90, Route 219, and Route 33. Even short trips can turn risky. Officials strongly discourage unnecessary travel through today and tonight.

Temperatures remain brutally cold. Highs struggle into the mid-20s today, while wind chills fall below zero at times. Snowfall rates may reach 2 inches per hour during stronger bands, reducing visibility to near zero within minutes. Conditions may briefly ease between bands, but improvement will not last.

Snow continues into Tuesday with lighter but persistent accumulations. Another round of lake-effect snow redevelops Tuesday night into Wednesday, extending the threat to the midweek commute. Gusty winds continue, keeping blowing snow an issue.

By Thursday, snow showers gradually taper, though bitter cold lingers. Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook shows colder-than-normal temperatures holding across the Great Lakes, while snow chances remain elevated.

Plan to stay put today if possible. If travel is unavoidable, pack emergency supplies and allow extra time.
