Buffalo, NY – Rain and snow are set to create hazardous travel conditions across Buffalo starting New Year’s Day and continuing through the week. Forecasters warn of slick roads, especially on major routes like I-90, as temperatures drop and precipitation transitions to snow.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rain will dominate Tuesday night before shifting to a wintry mix by Wednesday morning. By Wednesday evening, snow accumulation is expected to intensify as breezy conditions persist, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. Travelers should exercise caution, especially during the morning and evening commutes.

Wednesday’s high temperature is forecasted to be near 39 degrees before dropping into the 20s overnight. Snowfall could accumulate to 1-3 inches by Wednesday night, particularly in higher elevations. NWS advises drivers to allow extra time, carry winter survival kits, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall periods.

The extended forecast indicates continued snow showers into Thursday, with a high of 31 degrees. Friday and Saturday bring additional chances for snow, with highs hovering in the mid-20s. Overnight lows will remain frigid, dipping into the teens and low 20s.

Residents should prepare for potential disruptions, including slippery sidewalks, reduced visibility, and delays. Stay updated by monitoring local weather alerts and ensuring homes and vehicles are winter-ready.

Plan ahead to celebrate New Year’s safely, and avoid last-minute travel when road conditions worsen.
