New York, N.Y. – A brief stretch of seasonable summer weather will give way to building heat Tuesday as temperatures surge into the upper 80s and lower 90s across the New York City metro, with heat index values climbing into the mid-90s in the warmest locations.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, Monday will feature comfortable July conditions with highs generally in the lower to middle 80s across New York City, northeastern New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley and southern Connecticut. Coastal communities, including Long Island and the Connecticut shoreline, will remain a few degrees cooler thanks to an afternoon sea breeze.
The heat intensifies Tuesday as inland temperatures climb into the upper 80s to lower 90s, while neighborhoods across New York City, northeastern New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley and interior Connecticut could experience heat index values reaching the mid-90s during the afternoon. Immediate coastal areas are expected to stay in the lower 80s, offering modest relief.
Communities including Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Newark, White Plains, Poughkeepsie, Danbury and Hartford are expected to experience the greatest heat between noon and 6 p.m. Outdoor workers, commuters and those attending summer events should stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
The return of heat marks another midsummer warmup for the region, with additional hot and humid days possible later in the week. Residents should continue monitoring National Weather Service updates in case heat advisories become necessary as temperatures and humidity continue to rise.
