Albany, N.Y. – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across eastern New York Saturday afternoon into the early evening, bringing damaging wind gusts and localized severe weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the threat will develop ahead of a cold front moving through the region on May 17. A marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) has been issued for much of the Capital Region, the Hudson Valley, and surrounding areas, where some storms may produce wind gusts exceeding 58 mph.

Cities including Poughkeepsie, Schroon Lake, Glens Falls, and Bennington could see fast-moving storms that disrupt travel, down tree limbs, or knock out power. The exact timing and severity remain uncertain due to variable cloud cover, which could affect storm strength.

Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts, especially between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, and to stay indoors during any lightning activity. “See a flash, dash inside,” the weather service reminds.

This system may bring the first widespread thunderstorm risk of the month. Additional updates are expected as confidence grows, and new advisories may be issued if storm conditions intensify.
