Albany, NY – A fast-moving summer storm system could hammer the Albany region with heavy rain and thunderstorms by late Tuesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, there’s an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms beginning around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Some storms could bring gusty winds, brief downpours, and minor flooding in low-lying areas. Local drivers should use extra caution on I-90 and I-787, where slick roads and reduced visibility may impact the evening commute.

Cities across Rensselaer County — including Troy, East Greenbush, and Cohoes — are under heightened risk, especially in flood-prone zones. Rainfall totals may reach up to half an inch in some neighborhoods. The strongest storms are likely to push through between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday. Winds will shift northwest overnight, ushering in cooler, drier air by sunrise Wednesday.

Sunshine and warmer conditions return midweek, with highs reaching 81°F Wednesday and 83°F Thursday. While the storm threat tapers off quickly, residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during Tuesday’s storm window.

More isolated showers may return Friday into Saturday, though chances remain moderate.
