Binghamton, NY – A fast-moving snow squall is sweeping through central New York, bringing intense bursts of snow and dangerous whiteout conditions early Saturday morning. The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Snow Squall Warning for several counties, including Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Otsego, Tioga, and Tompkins, effective until 6:15 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service, the snow squall was detected at 5:24 a.m., extending from Unadilla Forks to Enfield and moving southeast at 30 mph. The storm is expected to produce wind gusts of up to 35 mph, significantly reducing visibility and creating hazardous travel conditions within minutes.
Areas impacted include Hunts Corners, West Danby, South Plymouth, McDonough, Buttermilk Falls State Park, and Cincinnatus. Major highways affected include New York Interstate 81 between Exits 8 and 9.
A second Snow Squall Warning was issued at 5:01 a.m. for additional counties, including Cayuga, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, and Yates, until 5:45 a.m. This squall, moving at 25 mph, is also expected to create sudden whiteout conditions along Interstates 86 and 390.
Motorists are urged to reduce speed, turn on headlights, and be prepared for near-zero visibility. Sudden weather shifts could make roads slick and treacherous. Travelers should exercise extreme caution and consider delaying trips until conditions improve.
