Albany, N.Y. – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across eastern and upstate New York Saturday, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts and hail up to 1 inch in diameter from Poughkeepsie to Glens Falls.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a slow-moving cold front will trigger scattered storms starting mid-afternoon and lasting through the evening. Areas under a slight risk for severe weather include Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, and Amsterdam, with a 15% chance of wind gusts topping 60 mph and isolated hail events.

Communities such as Herkimer, Cobleskill, and Indian Lake are also in the zone for both wind and hail threats. Forecasters highlight the possibility of hail over one inch and localized wind damage, especially in the Mohawk and Hudson valleys. The risk zone also stretches into parts of western Massachusetts and southern Vermont, including Bennington and Pittsfield.

Temperatures are expected to peak in the low to mid-80s in Hudson, Poughkeepsie, and Albany, adding instability to the atmosphere ahead of the front. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, secure outdoor items, and avoid open areas during storms.

Storm activity is expected to taper off by midnight, but additional updates and advisories may be issued throughout the evening.
