New York – Sunshine and comfortable summer warmth are giving residents a break this Monday, but the weather pattern is expected to shift quickly by Tuesday afternoon. Strong thunderstorms could develop rapidly, bringing dangerous travel conditions just as many people head home from work.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, pleasant weather today will be replaced Tuesday by scattered strong to severe thunderstorms across much of central New York and northeastern Pennsylvania. The greatest concern is expected from early Tuesday afternoon into the evening as storms move west to east across the region.
Forecasters say damaging straight-line wind gusts will be the primary hazard. Large hail, isolated tornadoes, torrential rainfall, and localized flash flooding are also possible with the strongest storms. A Level 2 of 5 Slight Risk covers much of the Binghamton forecast area, while areas farther south toward northeast Pennsylvania fall within a Level 3 of 5 Enhanced Risk, where severe storms are more likely.
Cities including Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, Cortland, Oneonta, Syracuse, Scranton, and Wilkes-Barre should closely monitor updated forecasts Tuesday. Motorists traveling along Interstates 81, 86, 88, and Route 17 (I-86) may encounter sudden downpours, poor visibility, ponding on roadways, and isolated tree damage if severe storms develop.
