New York, NY – Drivers across parts of the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey could hit slick overpasses within minutes Tuesday morning as light ice accumulation begins between 10 a.m. and the midday commute.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday for Orange County in New York and western Passaic County in New Jersey. Forecasters expect a glaze to around 0.02 inches of ice before temperatures rise and precipitation changes to plain rain by late afternoon.
The highest ice totals are expected near Middletown, Cold Spring and West Milford, where elevated roadways along Interstate 84, Interstate 87 and Route 17 could turn slick first. Even a few hundredths of an inch can freeze untreated bridges and ramps, creating spinout risks during heavier bursts.
Farther south and east, lighter impacts extend toward White Plains, Danbury and parts of coastal Connecticut. Snow totals generally range from a coating to around 0.5 inches north of I-287, with up to 0.8 inches possible in higher elevations. In New York City, Newark and along the Long Island Expressway, only a trace of ice or about 0.1 inch of snow is expected before rain takes over.
Motorists should slow down, leave extra following distance and avoid sudden braking on I-95, the FDR Drive and the Garden State Parkway. Charge devices in case of isolated outages and check with local DOT crews for treatment updates.
Conditions improve after 6 p.m. Tuesday as temperatures climb, but additional advisories could be issued if colder air lingers into the evening.
