Charlottesville, Virginia – Roads across the Blue Ridge and central Maryland could turn slick within hours as snow flips to freezing rain, coating pavement before the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, Winter Weather Advisories stretch from Highland and Augusta counties in Virginia through Albemarle, Greene, Madison and Orange, into the Shenandoah Valley and eastern West Virginia. Snow totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected along higher ridges, with ice accumulations up to 0.20 inches in Highland, Pendleton and Grant counties. In Albemarle and surrounding foothills, ice totals may reach 0.10 inches before 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Interstate 81, I-64 near Afton Mountain and U.S. 33 across the Blue Ridge could develop icy stretches overnight. In western Maryland, including Washington and Frederick counties and parts of Allegany and Garrett, freezing rain arrives between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. and may linger into early afternoon Tuesday. Eastern Garrett and western Mineral counties face up to 2 inches of snow and 0.20 inches of ice, increasing the risk of downed limbs and scattered outages.
Farther east, including Montgomery, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties, a glaze up to 0.10 inches may slow travel between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. Tuesday. Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for live road conditions before heading out. Advisories remain in effect through Tuesday morning into early afternoon, with conditions improving as precipitation changes to rain.
