New York, NY – Mariners navigating coastal waters around New York should prepare for dangerous conditions through early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday, with visibility expected to drop to one-quarter nautical mile or less. A Small Craft Advisory will follow, starting as early as midnight in some offshore areas, and continuing until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Southwest winds between 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots are forecast, along with seas rising between 2 to 8 feet depending on the area.
Affected zones include Long Island Sound, New York Harbor, Peconic and Gardiners Bays, and offshore waters from Sandy Hook, NJ, to Montauk Point, NY. The most severe marine conditions will occur along exposed waters and overnight Monday into Tuesday.
Inexperienced mariners and operators of small vessels are advised to avoid travel. Those who must navigate should use radar and compass tools, maintain proper fog signals, and ensure navigation lights are functional.
