Lansing, MI – A powerful ice storm swept across Northern Lower Michigan this weekend, prompting the activation of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) at 12 p.m. Sunday.
According to the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD), Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered the activation in response to widespread infrastructure damage and hazardous travel conditions. Emergency officials are coordinating with local governments and private sector partners to assess and meet resource needs.
The storm brought down trees and power lines throughout the northern part of the state, leaving thousands without power. In many areas, major roadways have been obstructed by fallen debris, making travel dangerous or impossible. Officials are urging residents to avoid roadways and shelter in place if possible.
MSP/EMHSD district coordinators are currently deployed across the region to support local emergency personnel. The SEOC, based in Lansing, is serving as the central hub for state-level coordination of response and recovery operations.
Residents are advised to check on neighbors, stay indoors, and prepare for extended outages. For preparedness tips and emergency updates, visit Michigan.gov/miready or follow @MSPNorthernMI on X.
