Westbury, NY – A Long Island man was killed after being allegedly pulled into an MRI machine while wearing a 20-pound weight training necklace at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury. The strong magnetic field drew the 61-year-old toward the scanner, resulting in fatal injuries.

According to Nassau County Police Department, the man entered the MRI room without authorization while the machine was running. He was reportedly wearing a heavy chain and lock, commonly used for weight training, when he stepped inside. The force of the MRI’s magnet pulled him into the machine, causing a medical emergency. The man was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The victim’s wife told local media she had finished her own MRI scan and called her husband into the room to help her get up. She said he was still wearing the 20lb weight training necklace at the time of the accident. Staff on site reportedly attempted to intervene and called 911.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, MRI machines generate extremely powerful magnetic fields that can cause any nearby metal object to become a projectile. Safety protocols require all patients and visitors to remove metal items before entering an MRI suite.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing.
