Western New York — A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Wednesday through Thursday night as rain transitions to snow and cold, hazardous conditions develop across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo said precipitation will change from rain to snow Wednesday afternoon and evening across western and north central New York. Snowfall totals of 4 to 7 inches are expected across higher elevations east of Lake Erie, with locally higher amounts possible. Areas east of Lake Ontario could see 5 to 10 inches of snow, with the highest totals favored across the Tug Hill Plateau and northern Oswego County.

Forecasters said snowfall will continue through Thursday night in some areas, particularly downwind of the lakes. Snow-covered roads and reduced visibility are possible, especially during heavier bursts and overnight periods.

In addition to accumulating snow, the Weather Service warned that below-zero wind chill values are expected Thursday and Thursday night as colder air moves into the region. These conditions may pose a risk for frostbite with prolonged exposure.

The advisory covers much of western and north central New York, including communities east and southeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Travel may become difficult at times, particularly in higher terrain and lake-effect snow belts.

Residents are urged to monitor the latest forecasts and advisories, allow extra travel time, and prepare for cold temperatures and winter driving conditions. Changes in snowfall amounts remain possible depending on the exact placement of lake-effect bands.

This system may be especially relevant for commuters and overnight travelers navigating lake-effect-prone routes late Wednesday through Thursday night.
