New York — A High Wind Warning remains in effect across large portions of western New York until 10 p.m. EST Friday, with damaging wind gusts expected to peak later this afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are forecast across Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Northern Erie, Genesee, and Wyoming counties. The strongest gusts in these areas are expected between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
In Chautauqua and Southern Erie counties, winds are expected to shift through the day. South to southeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are forecast through early afternoon, followed by southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph from mid-afternoon into the evening. Downslope regions from the Chautauqua Ridge toward the Lake Erie shoreline are expected to see the strongest gusts earlier in the day, with widespread strong winds developing later.
Cities included in the warning area include Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Rochester, Medina, Batavia, Warsaw, Jamestown, Orchard Park, and Springville.
The National Weather Service warned that strong winds could blow down trees and power lines, leading to scattered power outages. Travel is expected to be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, vans, and SUVs. Additional travel concerns are expected along the New York State Thruway, where wind gusts will be largely perpendicular to the roadway, increasing the risk for vehicle instability.
Residents are advised to avoid forested areas and locations near trees, remain indoors if possible, and stay away from windows during peak wind conditions. Drivers are urged to use caution or delay travel until winds subside.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken later Friday night after the warning expires.
